Fleas

During the summertime we experience an increase in calls related to biting and stinging pests. Have you experienced being out for a walk, or enjoying your back yard BBQ and realized something was feasting on your legs and arms? You’re then left scratching at your legs and arms for the next few days! This can be miserable. What is the cause of this misery? Well, in 2020 and 2021, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in mosquito activity. Mosquitoes are definitely to blame for ruining some of our summer nights.  We will talk more about mosquitoes later.

The other culprit are fleas. Fleas can also wreak havoc on our legs, as well as our pets, not to mention the potential of spreading diseases. Fleas typically pose a problem for wildlife. However, once a wild animal such as a skunk, possum, or raccoon passes through your yard, a hiking trail, or some other route, fleas dropped from the animal are left to look for a new host.

Sometimes that can be us, and sometimes it can be our pets. Once fleas make it into your home or yard this may be the start of a serious problem. Fleas can be hard to control and require treatment from a professional. In most cases the Pest Management Professional will need your assistance. This may be having your pet see a vet, and/or require you to clean/wash your pets bedding, or vacuum carpeted area in your home. Exterior conditions such as over watering can also be conducive to flea issues, as they will harbor in a cool shaded areas. A flea infestation can bring stress, discomfort, itchiness, and possibly disease. Do your best to take preventative measures.
